BELLFLOWER YOUTH AND SENIOR CENTER

Bellflower, CA

Client: The City of Bellflower
Location: Bellflower, CA
Scope: 12,000 sf Community Center
Role: Architect of Record

When the City of Bellflower began planning a new gathering place for Simms Park in 2020, the vision was clear: create a space where generations could connect, share, and strengthen community bonds. Working alongside the design team at Pretty/Smart, NCA Studio designed this 12,000 square-foot center to serve as the heart of daily life—a place welcoming youth and seniors alike, seven days a week

  • The design balances flexibility with purpose. A large common area and three community rooms with a commercial kitchen accommodate everything from after-school programs to senior gatherings, while administrative offices for Parks and Recreation anchor the building's civic function. Every decision honored the practical realities of public space: the need for durability under constant use, the importance of minimal maintenance, and the challenge of creating an aesthetic that would resonate across generations and earn the confidence of city leadership.

The process itself reflected NCA Studio's collaborative approach. It was a close collaboration between NCA Studio, Pretty Smart, the Parks and Recreation Department and Public Works Department. The design also responded thoughtfully to site conditions—navigating liquefaction zone requirements with a geo-grid and mat foundation system, while coordinating with a neighborhood-wide stormwater capture project beneath the park. The result is a resilient community anchor that honors how people gather and supports the programs that bring them together.
