LOW-RISE HOUSING FOR LA

Los Angeles Design Competition

Client: Office of Los Angeles Mayor and Chief Design Officer for the City of Los Angeles
Category: Competition
Scope: Concepts for Low Rise, Multi-Unit Housing
Role: Architect

The Low-Rise: Housing Ideas for Los Angeles competition invited architects and landscape architects to reimagine multi-unit housing for the city—to propose appealing, sustainable alternatives to traditional models that prioritize livability, community, and long-term value.

  • The proposal bridges affordability and livability through a flexible framework featuring three unit types—a loft, a one-bedroom plus loft, and a two-bedroom plan—alongside design principles that adapt to various low-rise sites across Los Angeles. Bar and L-shaped configurations allow for site-specific customization while maintaining core values of wellness, environmental responsibility, and economic feasibility.

Rather than designing for a specific demographic, we drew from interviews and research to identify universally recognized elements of healthy living: natural light, access to outdoor space, visual connection to nature, and thoughtful circulation. These features form a new baseline for housing that appeals across age, gender, and culture—inviting diverse, vibrant communities to thrive. The result is architecture that honors how people want to live and creates the conditions for genuine connection.
