This 1930s Silver Lake residence belonged to two professional musicians seeking to weave their sense of beauty and privacy into their hillside home. In a design collaboration between NCA Studio and Pretty Smart, we worked with the couple to develop a plan that reflected their lifestyle while navigating complex local codes, challenging soil conditions, and the unique demands of building on a Los Angeles hillside.

  • The home expanded through a lower-floor addition that tucks into the hillside beneath the existing structure. Cantilevered decks and private patios reach out over the slope, extending living space without adding significant square footage and capturing views of the Hollywood Hills. These outdoor spaces allow the couple to embrace Southern California's enviable climate and stunning landscape.

     

    The final design honors the couple's relaxed aesthetic throughout the existing home and the new master suite, bedroom, and music studio. It's a home shaped by how they live—a place for creativity, privacy, and connection to the landscape that surrounds them.
